Georgia launches America 250 vehicle tag ahead of 2026 semiquincentennial

ATLANTA — Georgia drivers will soon have a new license plate option honoring the nation’s upcoming 250th anniversary of independence.

Beginning Jan. 1, 2026, the Georgia Department of Revenue will offer a new standard vehicle tag recognizing America’s semiquincentennial. The USA Semiquincentennial, also known as the “America 250” plate, will be available at county tag offices statewide through 2030.

The America 250 plate will be offered alongside Georgia’s existing Peach Plate and Peach Orchard Plate. Vehicle owners may choose the commemorative tag when applying for a new title and registration or during the normal renewal window, which opens up to 60 days before a vehicle tag’s expiration date.

Hall County Tax Commissioner Darla Eden said the America 250 plate will be available to all Georgia drivers as a standard plate option.

According to the Department of Revenue, the commemorative tag was developed to recognize the historic milestone as the United States approaches its 250th anniversary in 2026, while also promoting civic education and historical awareness across Georgia.

The plate’s design was selected through a statewide civics education initiative involving Georgia middle school students and conducted in partnership with the Georgia Department of Education. The program was supported by the Georgia Commission on Civics Education, the Georgia Center for Civic Engagement, the Georgia Historical Society and other civic and historical organizations.

The winning design was submitted by Eden Pethel, a Georgia student and member of the Children of the American Revolution. Her artwork draws inspiration from Georgia’s Revolutionary War history and includes red stars symbolizing significant battle sites across the state.

“The red stars on the design represent the following Georgia Revolutionary War sites from north to south: Fight at Van’s Creek/Hornet’s Nest, Battle of Kettle Creek, Sieges of Augusta, Battle of Brier Creek, Battles of Savannah, Fort Morris, and the Frederica Naval Action,” Pethel said.

In announcing the new license plate, the Department of Revenue said the America 250 tag reflects Georgia’s continued focus on civic engagement, historical education and honoring the nation’s founding as the United States prepares to mark its semiquincentennial.
