GWINNETT COUNTY — The Georgia Department of Transportation announced that the final bridge necessary to complete the first phase of the I-85 widening project will be closed on Monday, January 6, 2020.   The Flowery Branch Road Bridge over I-85 will be closed in order for contractors for GDOT to perform bridge demolition and replacement. Flowery Branch Road will be closed to thru traffic from Apple Grove Road to Lilly Stem Drive. Signage will be up to help divert traffic to alternate routes that include diverting northbound traffic on Flowery Branch Road to Spout Springs Road and southbound traffic to Braselton Highway.  The estimated time of the bridge closure is 180 days starting on January 6.

The Flowery Branch Road Bridge over I-85 is the last bridge to be replaced along the stretch of I-85 from I-985 to SR 53. Jesse Cronic Road Bridge and the Spout Springs Road Bridge were also replaced as part of this project.  All three bridges were over 50 years old. The first phase of the I-85 widening project when complete will add 26 new lane-miles by expanding the interstate in both directions from two lanes to three lanes in between I-985 in Gwinnett County and SR 53 in Jackson County.
