SROs

During the July meeting of the Buford City Schools Board of Education, board members unanimously voted to hire three additional resource officers to be better equipped to ensure the safety of the students and staff of the district.

The new SROs were hired and they were formally introduced by Buford City Schools Chief of Police Mindy Bayreuther during the board meeting held Monday, Aug. 22.

The hiring of three additional officers makes it possible to have each officer assigned to each building that comprises the Buford City School district. That is one SRO for the elementary school, Buford Academy, Buford Senior Academy and Buford Middle School, while the high school will have two officers assigned.

The school resource officer who was hired and assigned to Buford Elementary School is David Genaro. Genaro has more than 12 years of law enforcement experience. He spent the past three and a half years as a school resource officer with the Gwinnett County Public School System stationed at GIVE West.

Joining the team at Buford Academy is Timothy Sims. Sims joins Buford City Schools with more than eight years of law enforcement experience with a specialty in gang relations.

Buford Senior Academy’s new school resource officer is Joel Carrasco. Carrasco brings more than 15 years of law enforcement experience, as well as seven years of active military experience, with him to BCS. He spent the past three and a half years as a school resource officer at Peachtree Ridge High School.

Bayreuther swore in the three new school resource officers during a ceremony Tuesday morning, Aug. 23, at the Buford City Schools Central Office. Bayreuther has been with BCS since January 2019 when she was tapped to create the SRO program within the school district.

Genaro, Sims and Carrasco join existing SROs Aaron Dieffenbacher, Bert Garcia and Angelica McKinley. McKinley will remain assigned to Buford Middle School while Dieffenbacher and Garcia are assigned to Buford High School.
