Wendy Vasquez, a first grader at Buford Academy, is working toward a big goal — reading chapter books. And this Reader of the Week is well on her way!

“Wendy has been working really hard this year to reach her goal of reading chapter books and she is almost there,” said Lana Nix, media specialist at Buford Academy. “She is determined to make it by the end of the year.”

Wendy, a student in Mrs. Young’s class, loves to read books about animals, and she’s a big fan of the Katie Woo series by award-winning author Fran Manushkin. The series is realistic fiction and follows Katie Woo on her adventures at school.

Outside of reading, Wendy likes to play hide-and-seek and football with her friends. She also likes to draw. One her favorite things to do is cook with her family — dad Jairo Vasquez, mom Sheyla Lopes, and her 5-year-old sister and 2-year-old brother.

“Wendy is a sweet little girl who is a friend to everyone,” Nix said. “She is a big helper in the classroom for Mrs. Young.”

The media specialists at the Buford Senior Academy and Buford Academy select the Buford City Schools Reader of the Week.  Buford students grades first through fifth have a chance at being named the Reader of the Week. In addition to appearing online and in print, the Reader of the Week receives a voucher to Stars and Strikes for all of their hard work.

The Buford City Schools Reader of the Week spotlight is made possible by the generosity of Peoples Bank & Trust, 1899 Buford Highway, Buford GA 30518, (770) 932-1900.
