In a battle of the Wolves, Buford comes out on top

BUFORD — The Wolves of Buford hosted the Wolves of Rome for the first round of the Class AAAAAA State Playoffs on Wednesday, Oct. 21, 2020.  Buford beat out Rome with set scores of 25-6, 25-7, 25-7.

Junior Mikayla Hayden led Buford’s offense with 13 kills while senior Grace Adams had 22 assists.  Leading Buford’s defense was senior Macy Upshaw with 12 digs.

Buford (29-2) will host Lassiter in the second round of the Class AAAAAA State Playoffs on Saturday.  Time is to be determined.

Lanier holds on to beat South Paulding, makes school history

SUGAR HILL — Lanier played host to South Paulding for the first round of the Class AAAAAA State Playoffs on Wednesday.  The Longhorns won their first set against the Spartans 26-24 but lost the next two sets 17-25, 16-25.  Lanier would rally in the fourth set winning that one by a sizable margin of 25-10.  In their final set, the Longhorns held off the Spartans to win that set 15-7.

This victory over South Paulding and making it to the Sweet Sixteen means that the 2020 Lanier High School varsity volleyball team made school history.  This will be the first time in Lanier’s history that the volleyball team has made it to the Sweet Sixteen.  Lanier passed the 30-wins mark for the season which is the second time in the program’s history to reach this accomplishment.

Junior MyAhn Byrd racked up 17 points with two aces, four kills, one block, 23 assists and nine digs.  Senior Cameron Davis had 14 kills, nine blocks, and three digs while sophomore Kate Scheesseele contributed with 11 points scored on serve with two aces, eight kills, and a dig. Junior Bailey Bradford scored eight points with five kills, eight blocks and two digs.  Senior Maia Rowland also scored eight points but hers came off of six digs.

Lanier (30-15) will play at Pope in the Sweet Sixteen on Saturday.  Time has yet to be announced.
