Buford 10, Mill Creek 0

It was a battle of the top two teams in Region 8-AAAAAAA, No. 1 Buford and No. 2 Mill Creek, on Thursday, Sept. 15 at Mill Creek. The Wolves took care of the Hawks in five innings with a score of 10-0. Buford improves to 7-0 in region competition and leads the region standings by three games. Overall, Buford’s record is now 15-0.

Freshman Caroline Stanton and senior Olivia Duncan took care of business on the mound for the Wolves. Stanton (4-0) pitched for four innings during which she gave up four hits, no runs scored and walked three. Duncan only had one walk, no hits or runs scored in her inning of relief.

Offensive standouts for Buford were sophomore Abby McKinnis (2-for-2, two RBIs, one run scored), junior Tavye Borders (1-for-3, two RBIs, one run scored), Duncan (2-for-2, triple, one RBI and two runs scored) and Stanton (1-for-3, double, two RBIs).

Buford will be back at home Monday, Sept. 19, when the Wolves host Walnut Grove for a non-region game. The game starts at 6:30 p.m. and it is Teacher Appreciation Night.

Lanier 4, Jackson County 1

Lanier traveled to play a Region 8-AAAAAA game against Jackson County on Thursday at Jackson County. The Longhorns got the win over the Panthers with a score of 4-1. Lanier’s overall season record improves to 6-9-1 and the team is 3-4 in the region.

Leading the Longhorns to victory on the mound was junior Ashley Miner, who pitched for seven innings where she allowed only three hits and a run.

Offensively, junior Addison Willett was a leader for Lanier. She was 2-for-3 with a home run and earned three RBIs.

Lanier will play a double header against Habersham Central in region competition at home on Tuesday, Sept. 20. The first game begins at 4:30 p.m.

North Gwinnett 15, Duluth 2

North Gwinnett beat fellow Region 7-AAAAAAA opponent Duluth 15-2 in five innings at Duluth High School on Thursday. The Bulldogs hold on to first place in the region and remain undefeated with a record of 4-0. Overall, their record improves to 14-4.

Freshman Victoria Na and junior Morgan Sullivan combine duties on the mound for North Gwinnett to get the win. Na pitched for three innings during which she gave up two hits, no runs and struck out six. Sullivan would pitch the remaining two innings in which she gave up two hits and two runs.

Offensive standouts for the Bulldogs were senior Amber Reed (3-for-4, double, three RBIs), senior Bella Faw (2-for-3, two doubles, three RBIs), sophomore Sydney Woyce (2-for-3, three RBIs) and senior Avery Fielden (one home run).

North Gwinnett played a double header on Friday, Sept. 16, against River Ridge.

VOLLEYBALL

Buford falls to Pope, beats St. Pius

Buford traveled to Pope High School on Thursday, Sept. 15, where the Wolves played Pope and St. Pius. Pope defeated Buford in game one with set scores of 25-19, 16-25, 15-9. Buford turned things around for the second game against St. Pius, winning 25-22, 25-11.

In the game against Pope, senior Ashley Sturzoiu had 11 kills and senior Dylan Cummings contributed with 12 digs.

Against St. Pius, Sturzoiu had 12 kills for the Wolves, while senior senior Sydney Austin contributed with seven kills.

In total, senior Polly Cummings recorded 50 assists after all stats were tallied between the two games.

Buford will host Dacula in a Region 8-AAAAAAA competition at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 20.
