Escape Room

The Gwinnett County Public Library is offering its patrons a new experience within its programming — the opportunity to beta test an online escape room game.

The library system is one of 10 across the country outside of Washington state to test the Euphorigen Investigation Escape Room created by researchers with the University of Washington. The game was initially tested by libraries in the state of Washington.

During the game, participants use Zoom to play in groups of four to six players.

“They work their way through a series of puzzles in the virtual escape room,” said Victoria Hopkins, director of marketing and communications for GCPL, who noted the game usually lasts 45 to 60 minutes, depending on how quickly participants solve puzzles. “There is a short debrief session afterwards to gather input from customers on their game playing experience. This anonymous feedback will be shared with the University of Washington so they can best improve the game.”

The game is for participants age 14 and older who will need to consent to allowing the university to record the game. Players will need access to a desktop or laptop computer with a camera and microphone, an Internet connection capable of using Zoom and one of three Internet browsers: Chrome, Firefox or Edge. Players will not be able to use school email accounts to register.

The game description states: “For years a supplement called “Euphorigen” has been used by the very wealthy to boost brain activity and productivity. Now the Government wants to make the benefits of Euphorigen available to everyone by introducing it into the public water supply. The company that makes Euphorigen claims to have completed successful trials, and an announcement of the deal is expected shortly. But your investigator friend has suspicions, and has heard that a prominent scientist has recorded a statement on whether or not the company’s claims are to be believed. She’s asked you to help find and share that information with the public. You have under an hour to track down whatever information you can on Euphorigen to uncover the truth, and spread the word!”
