The brightest students who have a gift for spelling competed in the Buford City School District Spelling Bee on Jan. 18, 2023, at Buford High School’s Performing Arts Center. Twenty-five spellers from grades 4-8 competed for the title of Buford City Schools Spelling Bee champion.

The spelling bee had a guest caller, GP Broadcaster, Sam Crenshaw. The judges for the event were Kathleen Welch, Buford City Schools Board of Education member; Janet Graves, retired BCS educator and Jill Anderson, retired BCS educator.

Arden Lowder, an eighth grader from Buford Middle School was declared the BCS Spelling Bee champion. Fifth grader Sophia Kim from Buford Senior Academy is the district’s alternate. 

“We are so proud of our District Spelling Bee winner, Arden Lowder,” BCS District Spelling Bee Coordinator Stephanie Ledford said. “She loves to read and especially loves all of Rick Riordan’s Percy Jackson and Magnus Chase books. Arden plays the piano and the trumpet, which she plays in Buford Middle School’s Symphonic Band. She enjoys competing on the Buford Middle School Quiz Bowl team.”

Lowder will represent Buford City Schools at the Georgia Regional Spelling Bee on Feb. 25, 2023.
