BUFORD — A Buford man is under investigation after authorities said he rigged postal mail slots across multiple states to steal more than $150,000 in checks. Apparently, he preferred “mail slot entrepreneurship” over a traditional 9-to-5.
Investigators said the man blocked drive-through mailboxes so deposited mail would not fall into the secured compartment, allowing him to return later and retrieve it. Surveillance footage reportedly captured him reaching into a mailbox behind the Oakwood Post Office. If nothing else, he had a very unusual commute.
A search of the man’s Buford home uncovered more than 300 pieces of suspected stolen mail and numerous altered checks. Investigators said the checks were chemically washed, rewritten in his name for different amounts, and then deposited into accounts he controlled. Officials described the alleged scheme as surprisingly sophisticated, though perhaps not the best long-term career plan.
Postal inspectors and local law enforcement are continuing to review the recovered mail to determine the full scope of the alleged theft. Victims may include both individuals and businesses who had checks stolen from mailboxes. Authorities said additional charges could be filed as the investigation continues.
The suspect was out on bond at the time of the most recent allegations. Officials are urging residents to remain vigilant with their mail — though most people probably don’t expect a “mail slot heist” to be on their daily radar.
