The Buford High School boys basketball team beat Sequoyah in a dramatic 73-72 state semi-final game in the GHSA AAAAAA playoffs Saturday, March 5.

It’s the closest win the Wolves have achieved in the playoffs with all of their other victories coming by at least eight points.

Buford opened the tournament by defeating Pope High School with a comfortable 60-49 scoreline. The next playoff victory came against Statesboro, 62-51.

The competition started to heat up in the quarter-final game against Carrollton, but the Wolves still pulled out a strong 62-54 win.

The close 73-72 victory means Buford will compete in the GHSA AAAAAA state championship, a vast improvement on last season, which saw the Wolves knocked out in the second round of the playoffs by Chattahoochee.

Buford will play the state championship final against Grovetown, which boasts a record of 28-3 this season. The game will be at 7:30 p.m. Friday, March 11, at the Macon Coliseum.

The Wolves are currently 12-1 in their region and 25-6 overall.
