Update: Great tree in good shape after bumpy arrival

LAWRENCEVILLE — Officials have provided an update on the Great Tree following last week’s eventful arrival in Lawrenceville Square. Despite early rumors, the tree did not split in half. It did sustain some damage to several branches and a small top section, but crews acted quickly to secure it on the lawn of the Gwinnett Historic Courthouse, where it now stands ready for the holiday season.

The damaged top portion has been repurposed into a smaller companion tree that will be displayed beneath the courthouse turret. The mini-tree will be decorated with popcorn garlands, birdseed pinecones and other nature-friendly ornaments, offering a festive display that also attracts local wildlife. Officials said the project highlights the team’s quick thinking and commitment to sustainable, creative holiday decorations.

Preparations are underway for the 38th annual Lighting of the Tree, scheduled for Thanksgiving evening at 5:30 p.m. at the Gwinnett Historic Courthouse. The celebration will include photos with Santa, live performances from local entertainers, a gingerbread contest and other holiday-themed activities for families.

“I am glad the Christmas Tree was saved,” said Patsy Crawford, a Lawrenceville resident. “It has been a tradition for our family to see the Christmas Tree Lighting for 52 years, and especially to visit the Christmas Tree during the Christmas season.”

Visitors are encouraged to arrive early, as parking in the downtown square can be limited. City officials also noted that this year’s display, including the smaller turret tree, offers a nature-friendly twist on the traditional holiday setup.
