Thanksgiving celebration set for Vietnamese American seniors in Norcross

NORCROSS — The First Senior Center of Georgia will host its annual Thanksgiving celebration Thursday, Nov. 20, bringing together Vietnamese American seniors to reflect on gratitude and share memories of their first Thanksgiving in the United States.

The event begins at 11 a.m. at the center’s Norcross location, 5555 Oakbrook Parkway, Building 500, Suite 500A. Attendees will hear remarks from community leaders and enjoy a series of cultural performances before sitting down to a traditional Thanksgiving meal.

Chairwoman Nicole Love Hendrickson of the Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners and District 1 Commissioner Kirkland Carden are scheduled to speak, along with FSCofGA founder and CEO Von Tran.

A full lineup of performances will showcase dances by staff and seniors, including powwow, colonial, modern and traditional routines.

Event Schedule

  • 11:05 a.m. – Remarks by Von Tran, founder and CEO

  • 11:10 a.m. – Remarks by Chairwoman Nicole Love Hendrickson

  • 11:15 a.m. – Remarks by Commissioner Kirkland Carden

  • 11:20 a.m. – Powwow dance performance by FSCofGA staff

  • 11:30 a.m. – Colonial dance by FSCofGA staff

  • 11:35 a.m. – Modern dance performance by FSCofGA staff

  • 11:40 a.m. – Senior dance performance

  • 11:50 a.m. – Traditional Thanksgiving meal

A photo from last year’s event featured seniors performing You Are My Sunshine, one of the first English songs many learned during ESL classes, as a gesture of appreciation for their new home in the United States.

About the First Senior Center of Georgia

The nonprofit provides free services to Vietnamese seniors across metro Atlanta, offering language support, food pantry assistance, benefits enrollment, wellness programs, housing support, transportation and crisis management. The center operates the second-largest food bank in Georgia, distributing more than 200,000 pounds of food to over 3,200 households monthly.
