Shortly before 4 am on January 25, 2018 Gwinnett County Police responded to a 911 call from an unknown person about a male walking along Peachtree Industrial Blvd towards State Route 20 (Nelson Brogdon Blvd) armed with a firearm.
Within minutes after receiving the call, officers caught up with the male in front of a laundromat in a strip mall attached to the Shell Gas Station located at 1330 Peachtree Industrial Blvd in Sugar Hill. A firearm was visible in his waistband and officers attempted to talk to the male. At one point the male reached into his waistband, pulled the gun out and began to raise it at the officers. One of the officers fired his gun at the male, striking him.
One of the responding officers was a SWAT medic and immediately began rendering aid until the Gwinnett County Fire Dept could show up on the scene. The GCFD responded to the scene and declared the male deceased.
The deceased has been identified as Steven D. Hutchins of Buford. His recent address was listed at a home on Gold Creek Trail. This residence is near the scene. Hutchins next of kin in Illinois has been notified.
On Monday, January 22, shortly before 9pm, officers assigned to the North Precinct responded to Steven’s residence in reference to a “suicide attempt” call. According to the text of the call, the subject refused all medical treatment.
On September 5, 2017, Steven made a police report about a theft involving his roommate.
Reasons behind Hutchins behavior on Thursday the 25th are unclear at this time. The investigation has been turned over to the Georgia Bureau of Investigations (GBI) as is standard protocol for any police involved shooting.
