BUFORD — The Gwinnett Police Department Accident Investigation Unit is investigating a multi-vehicle accident that claimed the life of a Sugar Hill man.

The crash happened just before 5 p.m. on Saturday, May 9 at the intersection of Peachtree Industrial Boulevard and South Waterworks Road in Buford.  The accident involved a brown SUV and a motorcycle.  The driver of the motorcycle died as a result of his injuries while the driver of the SUV sustained non-life threatening injuries.

The initial investigation states that the motorcycle driver, Zachary Speir, age 37 of Sugar Hill was traveling at a high rate of speed southbound on Peachtree Industrial Boulevard towards Sugar Hill.  The brown SUV was driven by a 64-year-old Buford woman and was traveling northbound on Peachtree Industrial Boulevard.  The SUV was preparing to turn left onto South Waterworks Road.  As the SUV was turning left, the SUV and motorcycle collided.

The force of the impact caused the SUV to roll over onto its roof coming to rest on South Waterworks Road. Speir was ejected from his motorcycle, killing him at the scene.

“Speed is believed to be a contributing factor to this collision,” said Corporal Michele Pihera, Public Information Officer for the Gwinnett County Police Department.
