Sugar Hill Historic Preservation Society offers scholarship opportunity for local students

In promoting and preserving city history, the Sugar Hill Historic Preservation Society is offering a $1,000 scholarship to a local high school senior.

“The SHHPS scholarship seeks to bridge the past and present by connecting Sugar Hill students with their roots and to encourage excitement for local history in celebration of our community,” a webpage announcing the scholarship states.

To be eligible to apply, students must live within the Sugar Hill city limits, be on track to graduate this spring and be admitted as a full-time student at a college, university or trade school program for the fall academic semester. Requirements for submissions include a completed application, proof of residency and an essay, from 600 to 1,000 words, with references.

Applicants are asked to review the Sugar Hill City Council records collection to identify an important civic aspect of how the city was founded and answer the following questions in the essay: How has that part of the city’s foundation grown over the years? How does the history help establish Sugar Hill’s identity as a city today?

Topics may include infrastructure — water, gas and phones — law enforcement, government organization, public involvement, entertainment, industry or voting trends. However, applicants may select any topic included in the council records collection.

The deadline to apply for the scholarship is Monday, April 10.

Essays will be reviewed by a committee and evaluated on historical accuracy, relevancy to the theme, creativity, writing ability and use of sources and research.

The recipient of the scholarship will be notified by Tuesday, May 9.

For more information on this scholarship opportunity, students may call the city museum at 678-541-6125.  An application and additional details can be found online at cityofsugarhill.com/shhps-scholarship-application-2023/.
