Sports recap: Lanier boys basketball wins 31st annual Deep South Classic

BOYS BASKETBALL

Lanier 61, Scottsboro 56

The Lanier varsity boys basketball team won the 31st annual Deep South Classic tournament hosted by Brookwood on Friday, Dec. 30. The Longhorns defeated Scottsboro 61-56 in the championship game.

Lanier’s offensive standouts were Tahai Morgan (12 points), Landon Suarez (12 points), Jayce Nathaniel (11 points) and Osmar Garcia-Araujo (nine points). Nathaniel and Garcia-Araujo were both named to the All-Journey team.

The Longhorns’ overall season record improveS to 8-4. Up next for Lanier is a region game at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 3, at North Forsyth.

Archer 60, Buford 58

Archer managed to stay one basket ahead of Buford in the inaugural Buford Classic tournament on Friday, Dec. 30 at the Buford Arena. The Tigers won that hard fought battle 60-58.

Buford’s overall season record falls to 8-4. Up next for Buford is a region game Friday, Jan. 6. at Mountain View. Game starts at 5 p.m.

Brookwood 62, North Gwinnett 59

The Brookwood varsity boys basketball team beat North Gwinnett 62-59 to capture fifth place at the Deep South Classic held at Brookwood on Friday, Dec. 30.

North’s overall season record falls to 4-7. Up next, North Gwinnett has a region home game against Duluth at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 3.

WRESTLING

Buford takes first place in North Carolina

The Buford varsity wrestling team took home the first place trophy at the 2022 Holy Angels Invitational Dec. 28-29 in Greensboro, North Carolina. Buford competed among 122 teams.

Buford had nine athletes finish in the top seven at the tournament. Those athletes were DJ Clarke, 106 (first place); Drew Gorman, 138 (first place); Conor McCloskey, 182 (third place); Gavin Pope, 145 (fourth place); Grayson Santee, 170 (fourth place); Maddox McArthur, 132 (fifth place); Aaron Riner, 195 (fifth place); Kieron McCormack, 126 (sixth place); and Rylan Ibold, 113 (seventh place).
