Sports recap: Buford softball, North Gwinnett volleyball stand undefeated

SOFTBALL

Buford 8, Dacula 2

Buford continues its undefeated season after successfully beating Region 8-AAAAAAA opponent Dacula on the road 8-2 on Thursday, Sept. 8.

On the mound for the Wolves was senior Olivia Duncan (7-0), who pitched her sixth complete game of the season. She allowed seven hits, two runs (one earned), struck out nine and did not walk a single Dacula player.

Buford was led offensively by junior Adriana Martinez (3-for-4, double, solo home run, two RBIs, two runs scored), freshman Caroline Stanton (2-for-4, two-run home run, three RBIs, one run scored) and junior Mackenzie Pickens (1-for-3, sac fly, one RBI, one run scored).

The Wolves improve to 13-0 overall and 5-0 in Region 8-AAAAAAA. Buford is two games ahead for first place in its region.

Buford will play two region games next week. The first is at Mountain View on Tuesday, Sept. 13, and the second is at Mill Creek on Thursday, Sept. 15. Both games start at 6 p.m.

VOLLEYBALL

North Gwinnett defeats Jefferson and Chestatee

North Gwinnett remains undefeated with an overall record of 20-0 after traveling to Jefferson for non-region play against the Dragons and Chestatee on Thursday, Sept. 8.

The Bulldogs defeated Jefferson in two sets 25-12, 25-14. North Gwinnett played three sets to beat Chestatee. The set scores for the Chestatee match were 25-17, 25-27, 15-8.

The Bulldogs were led by Joya Screen (22 kills, nine aces, 12 digs), Cailyn Hollinquest (18 kills, 10 digs), Abby Taylor (four kills, two aces, three digs), Katherine Mollette (26 digs, three aces) and Esosa Ehigiator (five kills, five blocks).

The Bulldogs will face four opponents today, Saturday, Sept. 10, as they compete in a tournament against McIntosh, Allatoona, Hillgrove and Pope. They begin Region 7-AAAAAAA play Tuesday, Sept. 13, against Discovery and Peachtree Ridge at Discovery.

Buford 3, Central Gwinnett 0

Buford’s volleyball team competed against Region 8-AAAAAAA opponent Central Gwinnett on Thursday, Sept. 8. The Wolves defeated the Knights with set scores of 25-8, 25-3, 25-12.

Standouts for the Wolves were Ashley Sturzoiu with 13 kills, Sydney Austin with 12 kills and Grace Moon had 25 assists.

Buford improves to 19-4 overall and 2-0 in Region 8-AAAAAAA.

Buford hosts Mill Creek next for a region game at 5:40 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 13.
