Scammers posing as Gwinnett Police target residents in ongoing phone scheme

Email :

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. – Gwinnett County residents are being warned about a surge in phone scams involving callers who impersonate local law enforcement officers—using fear and urgency to trick victims into handing over money.

The callers often use real or fabricated names, badge numbers, and even spoofed caller IDs to make the scam seem legitimate. Victims are typically threatened with arrest, legal charges, or other consequences unless they pay up immediately.

“These scammers are highly manipulative and prey on fear,” said a law enforcement fraud expert familiar with the case. “They often pressure victims to act fast, before they’ve had time to think clearly or verify the information.”

The Gwinnett County Police Department reports several variations of the scam, including:

  • Threats that a utility or service will be shut off without immediate payment

  • Claims that a relative has been arrested and needs bail

  • Allegations of missed jury duty that could lead to criminal charges

  • Promises of lottery winnings or loan approvals if a “processing” fee is paid

  • Fake calls from immigration officials threatening deportation

Police emphasized that the department never asks for money over the phone.

“If you receive one of these calls, hang up immediately,” the department said in a statement. “Then contact our non-emergency number at 770-513-5700 to report it.”

Authorities continue to investigate the source of the calls and encourage residents to talk to family members—especially older adults—about the scam to help prevent more people from falling victim.
