Saturday Softball Report: Lanier cruises past Elbert County

BOGART — The Lanier Longhorns traveled to North Oconee High School to play in the Hog Mountain Invitational tournament on Saturday.  Lanier easily cruised past Elbert County winning their game 12-2.

The winning pitcher for Lanier was Lauren Cothern who pitched for five innings in which she gave up two runs on five hits.  Cothern struck out three batters.

Sophomore Sara Byrum led the offense for the Longhorns going 3-for-3 earning one RBI.  Another sophomore Cecelia Sampona also had a good day at the plate going 2-for-3 with a double.  She earned five RBIs against Elbert County.  Cothern batted 2-for-2 and earned an RBI.  Freshman Devon Kokoszka was 2-for-3, hit a home run, and earned an RBI.

Lanier’s overall record is not 6-5 and they remain 1-3 in the region.

Lanier is once again on the road for their next game.  They travel to play region opponent Winder-Barrow on Tuesday, September 1 at 6 p.m.

NORTH GWINNETT  SWEEPS 

MARIETTA — North Gwinnett’s varsity softball team had a winning day at Lassiter High School playing a double-header against Calhoun and host Lassiter.  The put away Calhoun first winning that game 5-0 and then was victorious against a good Lassiter team with a final score of 7-2.

North Gwinnett’s sophomore pitcher Amber Reed pitched a seven-inning shut out against Calhoun.  She allowed only one baserunner on a hit batter and struck out an impressive 13 batters.

Offensive standouts for the Bulldogs against Calhoun were senior Haley Cummings with two RBIs and sophomore Ella Janish and senior Laila Sims each earned an RBI.

North Gwinnett got their win against Lassiter behind the combined efforts of Jaylyn Benson, Lily Runaas, Janish, and Megan Senn.

Senior Laila Sims and junior Marisa Miller each knocked the ball out of the park to score three runs apiece for North.

North Gwinnett’s overall record is now 8-1 and 1-1 in their region.

The Bulldogs will host the Mountain View Lions on Tuesday, September 1 at 6 p.m.
