Saturday afternoon accident claims the life of Duluth motorcyclist on I-85

SUWANEE — A local man dies after his motorcycle slams into the back of an SUV causing lane closures on Interstate 85 on Saturday, June 12, 2021.

The Suwanee Police Department responded to a fatality accident at 2:02 p.m. Saturday in the southbound lanes of Interstate 85 near Exit 111 – Lawrenceville Suwanee Road in Suwanee.

Richard Moore Hardison, age 36 of Duluth, Ga. was on his motorcycle traveling at high speeds in a northbound lane of the interstate when he crashed into the rear of an SUV also traveling northbound near Suwanee.

“The momentum of the motorcycle hitting the SUV caused the motorcycle and driver to go airborne, crossing the concrete divider and entering southbound I85,” Lieutenant Robert Thompson of the Suwanee Police Department said. “The motorcycle then landed on the top of a pickup truck traveling south on I85. Mr. Hardison was deceased at the scene, and the next of kin has been notified.”

The four occupants of the pickup truck sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were transported to local hospitals. The driver of the SUV that Hardison hit the rear of was treated and released at the scene.

All southbound lanes and at least one northbound lane of Interstate 85 were shut down for hours after the accident.

“There is an ongoing investigation by Suwanee Police Accident Investigation Unit. Any witnesses to the accident are asked to contact Sergeant Simon Byun at the Suwanee Police Department at 770-904-7650,” said Lieutenant Thompson.
