Number of positive COVID-19 cases in Georgia tops 10,000

At 7 p.m. on Wednesday, 10,189 Georgia residents have tested positive for the novel coronavirus according to the Georgia Department of Public Health.  That is an increase of 1,033 new cases since 7 p.m. on Tuesday. Over 2,000 of the positive COVID-19 cases have been hospitalized. The hospitalization rate for this virus is just over 20%.  The death toll has climbed by 21 people in 24 hours to bring the state’s total death toll from the coronavirus to 369. The current mortality rate in Georgia is 3.62%.

Females now make up 54% of the total positive cases of the virus while males comprise 44%.  The remaining 2% is unknown. The 18-59 age group takes up 60% of the cases. The over 60 group makes up 35% while the under 18 remains at 1%.  4% of the cases the age is unknown.

Gwinnett’s total number of positive COVID-19 cases rose by 49 since yesterday to be 589.  The death toll in the county is 18 which is an increase of five deaths since 7 p.m. on Tuesday.  Fulton’s number of positive coronavirus cases is up to 1,269. Dougherty remains in second with an astounding 1,003 cases.  They have the most deaths attributed to the virus at 62. That’s 20 more deaths than Fulton. Other hard-hit or nearby counties are Dekalb 735, Cobb 601, Clayton 296, Hall 234, Forsyth 101, Barrow 46, and Jackson 23.

The youngest known victim of the novel coronavirus is a 29-year-old female from Peach County.  It was not known if she had any preexisting conditions that would have contributed to her death.

In light of the current situation in the state, Georgia Governor Brian Kemp has extended the shelter in place order to April 30.  Kemp says that he has heard residents’ concerns that the state is becoming a vacation destination and has temporarily suspended short term vacation rentals.  He is calling for all residents with medical backgrounds, retired or active that can qualify for the medical reserve corps to please sign up to help fight COVID-19.  Hundreds of potential temporary hospital rooms have been identified across the state should the need arise.

The CDC says that 395,011 Americans have now tested positive for COVID-19.  The death toll in the U.S. is now at 12,754. New York now has 138,773 cases of coronavirus while New Jersey is second with 44,416.

According to the World Health Organization, the worldwide number of persons infected with COVID-19 is 1,356,780.  The death toll across the globe is now 79,385. The U.S. has roughly 2 ½ times as many positive cases as the next country of Spain which has 140,510.
