Gwinnett schools closer to hiring new superintendent after community feedback

GWINNETT COUNTY — The Gwinnett County Board of Education is advancing its search for a new superintendent, saying community input gathered this fall will shape the leadership profile.

Since August, the district has held 63 meetings and collected thousands of survey responses and focus‑group comments to identify the traits and priorities residents believe the next leader should bring.

Board members say respondents expressed strong pride in the district’s accomplishments but also described areas they believe need renewed attention.

Among the most‑mentioned themes:

  • Equity of resources — Many respondents said that while overall achievement is high, some schools and communities appear to have less access to support for multilingual learners and low‑income families. One consultant summary stated: “Some communities may have access to more resources than others.”

  • Building on success with innovation — Stakeholders want a superintendent who respects the district’s past and achievements, yet is ready to push forward with change. “They’re proud of their district but they want to push for change in certain ways,” said consultant Monica Santana Rosen.

  • Community involvement and transparency — Parents and residents said they want meaningful voice in major decisions, including school openings, attendance boundaries and programming. “I think it’s very important to have community involvement,” said one local resident.

The search follows the board’s early termination of former Superintendent Dr. Calvin Watts in January. Interim Superintendent Dr. Al Taylor has served since April.

The board plans to finalize the job posting soon, begin interviews in January and select a permanent superintendent by early April. The new superintendent is expected to assume office by July 1.
