Gwinnett jail inmate tests positive for COVID-19, court cases temporarily suspended

The Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Office released a statement on Friday afternoon, Sept. 24, 2021, stating that an inmate at the Gwinnett County Jail tested positive for COVID-19.

Out of caution, inmates who were waiting on transportation to the Gwinnett Justice and Administration building were placed into admissions holding cells at the courthouse. The jail staff then decided that it would be best to move those inmates’ court cases to another date.

As we continue to perform contact tracing, we are confident that this is a single case and that it has been contained,” the Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Office said in the released statement. “This occurrence did not disrupt standard operations at the Gwinnett  Justice and Administration Center and Jail Courts. The Sheriff’s Office will also continue to follow  all federal and state guidelines and suggested practices.”

The Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Office expects to resume court services at an “appropriate time.”
