Gwinnett County Police Department to host summer youth academy

Gwinnett County youth have a special opportunity this summer — the Gwinnett County Police Department will host its summer youth police academy.

The academy is designed to educate middle school and high school students about the police department and how officers enforce local and state laws.

“The goal of the YPA is to create and develop a relationship with students and give them an opportunity to learn about the Gwinnett County Police Department’s role in the community and the services it provides,” a news release states.

The youth police academy is free and open to all students who live in Gwinnett who will be enrolled in middle or high school in August. Participants must successfully pass an application process to attend the academy.

Each academy is held in one-week sessions from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. The academy for middle school students will be held from July 12-16, while the high school academy will be held from July 19-23.
