BUFORD — The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has released the identity of the man who carjacked a vehicle and shot at police along Shadburn Ferry Road near Lake Lanier on Friday afternoon.

The man identified as John James Monahan, Jr., age 26 of Ellabell, Ga. in Bryan County was involved in a wreck at the intersection of Shadburn Ferry Road and Peachtree Industrial Road in Buford Friday afternoon.  He fled the scene of the wreck with what has been described as an AK style rifle.

Witnesses said that Monahan carjacked a black truck and led police on a chase down Shadburn Ferry Road into the Shoal Creek Campground area at Lake Lanier where he shot at police as he drove into the lake.  A couple of police cars were hit by Monahan’s bullets.  Gwinnett County Police returned fire.

Hall County Dive Team later recovered the stolen truck along with Monahan’s body which was found by divers near the stolen vehicle hours after the initial incident.

The investigation was turned over to the GBI as is customary with any officer-involved shooting in the State of Georgia.

No other details have been released by law enforcement.

The investigation is ongoing.
