The fire occurred Wednesday, Jan. 29, in the 5100 block of Stick Court NE in Sugar Hill. Crews with Gwinnett County Fire and Emergency Services arrived at the scene at 4:54 p.m. after a 911 caller reported seeing smoke coming from the roof of the home. Crews found no evidence of fire visible from the single-story structure. Neighbors told firefighters they believed the homeowner was inside the residence. Firefighters then found a smoke-filled room and began deploying multiple fire hoses to control the flames as they entered the residence to search for the homeowner.

Search teams found the unresponsive elderly female in a hospital bed in the living room of the residence. The patient was removed from the home and cared for by emergency medical crews standing by. The patient was transported to an area hospital in critical condition.

Fire investigators on scene said the cause of the accidental blaze was related to smoking products.
