NORCROSS — A father and daughter were hospitalized Saturday morning after a house fire broke out at their home on Riva Ridge Drive NW in Norcross.

Firefighters were called to the scene just after 6 a.m. when a woman reported her home was on fire and her father was trapped inside.

Crews arrived within minutes to find flames coming from the single-story house. The daughter had escaped, but she told firefighters her elderly father was still inside. Security bars on the windows and doors on one side of the house created challenges for entry.

Firefighters entered through a front window and found the man unresponsive near a bedroom window. He was rescued and taken to Grady Memorial Hospital for treatment. His condition was not released.

The daughter was later taken to Northside Gwinnett Medical Center for a non-life-threatening medical issue.

Fire crews were able to contain the fire, which started in a bedroom and spread to the attic. No other injuries were reported, but the fire displaced both residents.

Investigators determined the fire was accidental, caused by discarded smoking materials.

Fire officials urge residents to review their home escape plans and ensure that any security bars on windows and doors have quick-release devices, as recommended by the National Fire Protection Association.
