Coronavirus daily update 3/26/2020; death toll climbs to 48 in Georgia

On Thursday, March 26, 2020, the Georgia Department of Public Health released the new numbers for the coronavirus pandemic in the state.  In the past 24 hours, the state has had an increase of 278 confirmed cases of COVID-19 bringing the total number of cases to date to 1,525.  Eight more people have lost their lives since yesterday making the total number of deaths associated with the virus to 48. 473 people have been hospitalized.

Women continue to lead the genders with 50% of the total cases while the males are at 46% with 4% being unknown.  The percentage of cases that are in the 18-59 age group dropped slightly from 60% to 59% overnight. The over 60 group makes up 35% of the total number of confirmed cases while the under 18 group remains steady at 1%.  The cases where the age is not known is 5%.

The total number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Gwinnett County had a sharp increase overnight rising from 48 yesterday to 75 today.  Other counties that are hard-hit or are neighbors of Gwinnett are: Fulton 211 (+13), Dougherty 156 (+47), Dekalb 129 (+13), Cobb 115 (+14), Bartow 86 (+8) , Hall 21 (+2), Forsyth 15 (+6), Barrow 4 (+2), and Jackson 1 (0).

The numbers from the CDC today have the total number of confirmed coronavirus cases at 68,440.  That is an increase of 13,987 cases since yesterday. The total number of deaths related to the virus has risen from 737 yesterday to 994 today.  New York is still leading the nation with 32,966 cases while California is second with 2,982 cases.

Checking in with the World Health Organization, the total number of confirmed cases worldwide is up to 416,686.  The death toll from COVID-19 is 18,589 worldwide. Italy is up to 69,176 cases with 6,820 dead. The numbers from the WHO are not as current as those from the individual agencies that report to the WHO like the CDC so more than likely Italy’s numbers are a good bit higher than this in real-time.

Government

Gwinnett County along with several city municipalities including Buford and Sugar Hill have declared a State of Emergency and ratified Executive Orders which calls for the closure of all indoor and outdoor restaurant dining facilities, nightclubs, and bars.  Restaurants can still operate through their drive-thru windows, takeout, and delivery services.

The order also called for all nail salons, hair salons, gyms, fitness centers/studios, movie theaters, live performance venues, bowling alleys, arcades, entertainment centers, and other similar establishments to close.  Home hair and nail salons are exempt.

The declaration backs up Gov. Kemp’s orders from March 23 which called for all medically fragile people to shelter in place and that all events/businesses with more than 10 people gathered must close unless six feet between each person can be guaranteed.
