Backpacks are packed, buses are rolling and classrooms were once again filled with the sound of learning as students across Gwinnett County returned to school.
The start of the 2025–2026 school year marks a return to routine for thousands of students, teachers and families in Buford, Sugar Hill, Suwanee and surrounding communities.
Buford City Schools opened their doors on Friday, Aug. 1, while Gwinnett County Public Schools
welcomed students back on Monday Aug. 4.
Superintendents across the region shared messages of encouragement, highlighting new initiatives, updated facilities and continued focus on academic achievement and student well-being.
“This is always an exciting time of year, filled with fresh starts and new opportunities,” Buford Superintendent Dr. Amy Chafin said. “Our staff is ready to support, challenge and inspire students every step of the way.”

Many campuses spent the summer upgrading security measures, expanding extracurricular offerings and preparing for anticipated enrollment growth. At Buford High School, students were also greeted by the district’s new stadium, Phillip Beard Stadium, marking a historic milestone for the community.
Parents and guardians braved long carpool lines with first-day photos in hand, while kindergartners clutched new lunchboxes and met their teachers with wide-eyed wonder.
“I was a little nervous, but now I’m excited,” said Charlotte Johnson, a third grader at Buford Senior Academy who said she’s glad summer is over. “I missed my friends that I only see at school.”
Teachers across grade levels embraced the fresh start, decorating classrooms and rolling out lesson plans focused on engagement and goal setting.

Administrators are reminding families to stay connected through school newsletters, social media and district websites to keep up with important dates and announcements throughout the year.
With buses running their routes and students settling into their schedules, the 2025–2026 school year is officially underway — bringing with it both the familiar rhythms of school life and the promise of growth for all.
