Buford shuts down Marietta in battle of two defensive lines

In a battle of two defensive lines, Buford came out on top 14-0 over Marietta on Friday night, Sept. 23, at Northcutt Stadium.

Both teams’ defenses were extremely stingy as the Wolves allowed no points to be scored by the Blue Devils. Buford only managed two touchdowns against Marietta when the Wolves had scored an average of close to 40 points a game in their previous four games.

The first touchdown of the night came after a four-play drive with 3:41 left in the first quarter as senior Justice Haynes ran the ball 57 yards for the score. Buford went up 7-0 over Marietta.

Buford’s defense held strong on the next possession by Marietta ending with Marietta having to punt the ball away.

The Wolves would capitalize off their next possession that would last 9 1/2 minutes. It would take Buford 12 plays spanning 51 yards before senior quarterback Dylan Wittke threw a seven-yard touchdown pass to junior K.J. Bolden to make the score 14-0 with 7:15 left in the second quarter.

After those two touchdowns, neither team could find its groove. Buford had to deal with a number of penalties, which kept the Wolves from getting into the end zone again.

The Wolves’ overall season record improves to 5-0.

Buford will begin its region schedule next Friday, Sept. 30, when the Wolves host Collins Hill at Tom Riden Stadium at 7:30 p.m. Collins Hill is the defending GHSA Class AAAAAAA State Champion.
