BUFORD — Two Buford residents are facing felony murder and child cruelty charges following an investigation into the death of their 5-year-old daughter.

Jerrail Maurice Mickens, 31, and Porscha Danielle Mickens, 29, were arrested by Hall County Sherriff’s Deputies on Tuesday morning.

The arrests and subsequent charges stem from the June 8, 2020, death of their daughter, Kylie L. Mickens. On June 7, 2020, officials at Northeast Georgia Medical Center Braselton notified deputies that an unresponsive 5-year-old-girl had been brought to the hospital for treatment by her parents. Kylie, who was severely malnourished, was flown to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta — Scottish Rite Hospital. Deputies notified the Hall County Division of Family and Children Services and sheriff’s office investigators of the situation.

On Monday, June, 8, investigators were notified by CHOA that Kiley had died.

The sheriff’s office then began a four-month investigation that included interviews, execution of a search warrant at the Mickens’ home and an autopsy by the GBI Medical Examiner’s Office.

According to autopsy results received by investigators in early October, Kylie’s cause of death was dehydration and malnutrition due to medical neglect, with the manner of death being homicide.

The couple remained in the Hall County Jail without bond Tuesday afternoon.
