BUFORD — When the 2025 high school football season begins in Georgia, all eyes will be on Buford as the Wolves host the Milton Eagles in a nationally televised showdown on ESPN.

The marquee matchup, announced via Buford football’s social media, is set for 7 p.m. Aug. 14 and will serve as a special edition season opener. This game pits two Georgia powerhouses against each other: 14-time GHSA state champion Buford and three-time state champion Milton.

Adding to the stakes is the recent history between the two teams. Last season, Milton edged Buford in a low-scoring 13-10 battle to kick off the 2024 campaign. The Eagles went on to win the Class 5A state title, defeating Langston Hughes 56-35 in the championship game.

Milton enters 2025 with a revamped offense following the graduation of several key starters, including standout quarterback Luke Nickel, now playing at the University of Miami.

Buford, however, will return with star quarterback Dayton Raiola, a Nebraska commit who threw for 1,953 yards and 19 touchdowns last season. Raiola is expected to be one of the top playmakers in the state this fall.

The game will also mark the official opening of Buford’s brand-new $62 million home stadium, which is nearing completion after eight months of construction. The state-of-the-art venue includes a large video board, a full press box, multiple luxury suites, and a trophy-lined concourse celebrating Buford’s historic football legacy.

The Wolves’ new football complex also features six additional practice fields and a dedicated junior varsity field, reflecting the program’s continued commitment to excellence at all levels.

Buford’s 2025 schedule features 10 games, including notable contests against Benedictine, Central Gwinnett, Collins Hill, Douglas County, and, of course, the high-profile opener against Milton.

With national attention, elite talent, and a cutting-edge facility on display, the Aug. 14 matchup promises to be one of the most anticipated high school football games of the year.
