The Buford High School varsity boys basketball team lost the GHSA AAAAAA state championship game Friday, March 11, at the Macon Coliseum.

After a hard fought tournament, the Wolves were finally knocked out in a 66-59 defeat against Grovetown High School.

I’m very proud of my guys,” said head coach Benjamin Wood. “The season didn’t end like we had hoped, but I’m proud of their growth as players and as young men.”

Buford won the tip off, and the first quarter saw the teams exchanging points in a neck-and-neck contest that ended with nothing between them at a 12-12 scoreline.

The second quarter, however, saw Grovetown pull ahead and go into halftime with a much more comfortable lead of 32-19.

The Wolves pushed back after halftime and went a long way toward closing the gap with the third quarter finishing at a tight 47-43 in Grovetown’s favor.

In the dramatic fourth quarter conclusion, the Wolves were down just 61-59 with less than a minute on the clock. Unfortunately for Buford, a couple late fouls allowed Grovetown to pull ahead, and the game finished 66-59.

Buford boys varsity basketball finished the season with a record of 25-7, having lost just one of 13 region games.

Next year, the Wolves basketball team will move up a classification and compete in the GHSA Region AAAAAAA.
