BUFORD — The lights. The turf. The towering press box and pristine seating. At first glance, Buford High School’s new stadium looks like something out of a major college program, a marvel of modern design.
But behind the steel, concrete and perfectly lined end zones lies a deeper story, one that isn’t about sports or spectacle, but about strategy, stewardship and a legacy decades in the making.
This is more than a stadium. It’s a monument to a man whose vision helped turn a small Georgia town’s schools into one of the nation’s top-performing systems, all while keeping its foundation strong and its finances sound.
His name is etched into the entrance: Phillip Beard.
And the story behind that name is one of quiet leadership, relentless discipline and a belief that excellence should be built to last.
Guiding growth with a steady hand
Beard has been a guiding force in Buford for more than 40 years, serving on both the City Commission and the Buford Board of Education. Known for his deep institutional knowledge, fiscal responsibility and fierce pride in his community, Beard played a critical role in preserving Buford’s small-town character even as it experienced unprecedented growth.
“It is hard to overestimate the impact that Phillip Beard has had on this school system,” said Bruce Fricks, a member of the Buford Board of Education.
“When planning, Mr. Beard is not thinking about this semester or next year, but about what will set our schools up for success decades in the future,” Fricks said. “This farsighted thinking is rare at any time, but I think particularly unusual today when so many are under pressure to show immediate improvement.

“This benefits not just the schools, but the city as well,” he added, “as Mr. Beard takes this same long-term approach to concerns of the city as he does for the schools.”
Beard’s tenure wasn’t about politics, it was about people. Students. Families. Teachers. Neighbors. His leadership philosophy was simple: build it strong, build it right and build it to last.
The new Phillip Beard Stadium is a testament to that philosophy. With expanded seating, modern facilities and architectural features that mirror the iconic Buford style, the stadium reflects the high standards Beard helped instill across the city.
“For Mr. Beard, it was never just about buildings or budgets,” said Cory Burge, also a member of the Buford Board of Education. “One of the biggest factors that can be traced back to his influence is the investment into our school system.”
That investment, Burge said, goes far beyond physical infrastructure. “If we pour into our school system, we are literally supporting our community from the ground up,” he said. “We are providing our students with an exceptional education that also draws exceptional parents who live and work in our community.”
The ripple effects, he noted, have been powerful and lasting.
“Buford has some of the highest retention rates of community members who are products of our schools, people who choose to live their adult lives pouring back into the very community that built them,” Burge said. “That type of deeply rooted community appreciation doesn’t happen by accident.”
Big results without big taxes
Perhaps the most remarkable part of Beard’s legacy is that it was achieved without heavy taxation or financial strain on local families.
Under Beard’s leadership, Buford has maintained one of the lowest millage rates in the state, proof that smart governance doesn’t require high spending. Instead, the city operated under a philosophy of living within its means, building for the future and reinvesting locally.
That discipline enabled Buford to invest in top-tier performing arts centers, modern classrooms, career and technical education facilities and, now, an athletic complex that rivals any in the region.
Two names, one standard of excellence
Phillip Beard Stadium, paired with Dexter Wood Field, is the latest chapter in Buford’s long story of strategic development.
“Buford City Schools would not be as successful as it is today without everyone in the community pulling together, and Mr. Beard is keenly aware of this,” Fricks said. “One simple way you can see how community is built over time is how Mr. Beard runs either a City Commission or School Board meeting. At the end of the meeting, he will solicit questions from anyone in the room. That is very different from many other public meetings, where elected officials are creating time limits and processes that make it harder for community members to be heard.
“That doesn’t mean there will be agreement every time someone voices an opinion,” Fricks said, “but it does make it easier for everyone in the community to participate in making our community and schools better.”

Fricks added, “I have learned a lot from Phillip Beard and consider myself a better Board member because of his wisdom over the years.”
Dexter Wood Field is named in honor of the legendary Buford High School football coach and athletic director who led the Wolves to multiple state championships and helped build one of the most respected athletic programs in Georgia. Wood’s legacy of discipline, tradition and excellence on the field mirrors the values Beard upheld off the field. Together, their names represent a commitment to both leadership and performance, on the turf and in the community.
“I personally think it is important to honor and remember the people who have served and impacted our community,” Burge said. “Mr. Beard and Coach Dexter Wood have served and grown Buford in unmistakable ways, and I’m thankful for their continued service to Buford.”
Built to last
While the new stadium facility will host football games and community events, it will also stand as a daily reminder of the ideals that built it: discipline, alignment and pride.
Even as new generations of students enter the halls of Buford High School, they do so surrounded by the results of Beard’s work — strong academics, elite extracurriculars and facilities that reflect the value the community places on education.
As Buford celebrates its new stadium and continues its rise on the national stage, the community does so with deep roots — roots nurtured by leaders like Phillip Beard, who believed that greatness is not accidental. It’s built, piece by piece, with care, foresight and an unwavering belief in the people you serve.
From championship games to Friday night lights, the stadium will be the backdrop for countless memories. But with Beard’s name on the entrance, every cheer and every victory will carry the weight of a legacy built to last — brick by brick, yard by yard.
“I hope everyone who attends a game or event at Phillip Beard Stadium feels just the warmth and togetherness of this community,” Burge said. “I hope that generations of Wolves will gather with a deep sense of pride for how far we have come and simultaneously for how much more we hope to accomplish in the future.”
