BHS Theatre Troupe Takes Region One Act

Buford High School’s theatre troupe won top honors in the Region 8-AAAAA One Act Play Competition on Saturday, October 21, at the Buford Fine Arts Center, where the Wolfpack Players presented a 55-minute abridged version of the Tony-award nominated musical The Scarlet Pimpernel. A dramatic piece of historical fiction, The Scarlet Pimpernel is rich in mystery and suspense as the British title character goes undercover to thwart a devious plan by French officials during the infamous Reign of Terror following the start of the French Revolution. Portraying Sir Percy Blakeney, covertly known as “The Scarlet Pimpernel,” was Buford High School junior, Trevor Dodge, who was awarded Best Actor at the event. The antagonist, Citizen Chauvelin, was played by BHS senior Elam Rothweiler, who was named Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of the fanatical villain at the helm of the murderous tirade. Blakeney’s love interest, French national Marguerite St. Just, was played by BHS senior Hailey Thornton, who received honorable mention by being named to the All-Star Cast. Buford also received a nod from the judges for Best Costumes. Finishing second was Flowery Branch High School’s drama department with the straight play Love/Sick. Coming in third place was the team from Johnson High School in Oakwood, who presented a touching performance of the contemporary musical The Spitfire Grill. The troupe from Buford High School will represent GHSA’s Region 8-AAAAA at the State’s AAAAA One Act Play competition at Troup County High School LaGrange, Georgia on Saturday, November 4 at noon. Best of luck to the Wolfpack Players as they defend their state title!
